• Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects 1 in 5 Canadians.

  • Ninety per cent of people have type 2 diabetes while type 1 comprises only 10 per cent.  

  • In 2010 it was estimated that 338,000 people in British Columbia have diabetes and this number is expected to increase to 548,000 (10.3 per cent) over the next decade.  

  • With factors such as population growth, an aging population, rising incidence rates and declining mortality rates, it is expected that by 2020 there will be a 62% increase in the number of people living with diabetes in British Columbia.
