  • Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, end stage renal disease (ESRD) and non-traumatic amputation in Canadian adults

  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in individuals with diabetes and occurs two- to fourfold more often than in people without diabetes. 

  • Ninety per cent of people have type 2 diabetes while type 1 comprises only 10 per cent.  

  • In 2015 it was estimated that 3.4million people in Canada, 9.3% of the population, had diabetes. This is expected to rise to 5 million or 12.1% by 2025.  

  • The estimated prevalence of prediabetes in adults in Canada in 2015 was 5.7 million or 22.1% of the population.
